In the words of the ancient Indian text, Vedanta Kesari, "अभ्यासोऽपि द्विधा स्वादधिकरणशाहेहिको मानसश्च" (Abhyaso'pi dvidha svadadhikaranashahihiko manasashcha), meaning "There are two types of practices: one for the body and the other for the mind." This quote encapsulates the essence of subtle yoga, highlighting the dual nature of its approach. It's important to note that neither avenue is deemed superior or inferior; rather, they cater to different goals and preferences, offering practitioners a comprehensive method for personal growth and self-discovery. Subtle yoga primarily consists of three interrelated components: Vata Nikshasana, Pranayama, and Meditation (Rhythmic), culminating in Omkar Sadhana. These components form the backbone of subtle yoga practice, each contributing to the overall harmony and balance of body and mind. Vata Nikshasana, the first component, focuses on the removal of the vata component from the body. Vata, according to Ayurveda, is one of the three doshas or bio-energies responsible for various bodily functions. Through specific techniques and postures, practitioners aim to release vata from approximately 79% of skeletal muscles, 32 joints, and stimulate 14 glands within the initial 20 minutes of practice. This phase sets the foundation for the subsequent components of subtle yoga, preparing the body and mind for deeper exploration and practice. The subsequent section focuses on Pranayama, a 20-minute practice aimed at regulating breathing patterns. This includes deep breathing, breath focus, and specific breathing techniques like Chandrabhedan ( deep breathing through only left nostril) and Suryabhedan (deep breathing through only right nostril) . The sequence concludes with a 14-minute meditation session, preparing practitioners for Omkar Sadhana. Subtle yoga offers a holistic approach to physical and mental well-being, blending ancient wisdom with practical techniques to achieve inner balance and self-mastery.
